Is Leadership a popularity contest?

What a great time to be writing a blog on Leadership, in fact, I had already written my blog on Leadership for November when I had a change of heart, partly due to the recent events. It's okay the one I had intended on sharing was ' Leadership is for the over 50's!' (Controversial), I will release next week instead.

With the recent US elections and the appointment of Joe Biden as the president-elect, it's a good time to look at the qualities that are needed to be a formidable leader.

I opened the title of this blog as an open question; Is leadership a popularity contest? This is because I wonder how people decide? It should be based on so much more, then whether you are liked.

Leadership should be based on many skills and having the right balance of qualities such as

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Empowering, Empathetic & excellent people management skills

  • Strategic Thinking & Visionary

  • Influencing and persuasion skills

  • Change management & innovation

  • Balanced and emotionally intelligent

The best book I have read on Leadership has to be the ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ by Stephen Covey. The reality is that anyone can be a leader and leadership can be demonstrated from within a cross-section of any business, not just the CEO.

While being the President of the United States may be a goal too far for you (although this would be okay too), it is important to believe in yourself and know that you could be a leader in your own right. If you have dreams of running your own business or climbing the corporate ladder, it is 100% achievable. It takes a huge amount of self-belief and investment, and when I say investment, I mean investing in your own personal development. We can all learn how to be successful and improve our interpersonal skills. You just need determination, commitment, and a clear goal or dream.

I would urge you to go for it, if you have dreams of being a leader, then jump right in, you might just be the one that could make a massive positive impact for the better.

If Advance your Wellbeing could help you improve your interpersonal skills, then we would love to hear from you. Call us on 07583474539
